Getting the Right Parts for Your Equipment
It’s never a good time to have equipment break down, but some times are worse than others. We’ve all been there when you’re right on schedule for planting and harvesting and something goes south. It’s no fun when that schedule goes awry.
To minimize the likelihood of a breakdown, here’s some advice assembled by your good friends at Ebling's Service Plus + RS Hollinger. We’ve got two Pennsylvania locations, in Myerstown and Mountville. With parts and service departments in both locations, we’ve got your back! We’re here to keep your machinery well maintained and ready to roll; to help you fix it yourself with our parts department; and to maintain and fix it for you.
Routine Inspection
Performing a routine inspection is a great way to keep tabs on your agricultural equipment. Many big problems start small with a leak or another visual indication, or maybe with noise that sounds a little off. Don’t dismiss your other senses: Sometimes a noise, a vibration, or a smell is the early indicator of trouble. If it looks, smells, or sounds off, check for anything abnormal, and follow up with us if you can’t figure out what’s going on. It’s always better to fix things when they are just beginning to go out of whack, rather than wait until they start to cause problems.
What to Keep Handy
Pretty much anyone who is a farmer has some DIY (do it yourself) inclinations. Here’s a list of minor parts and other materials we suggest you keep on hand, so you can keep your equipment in top form.
- Filters (oil, air, fuel, and hydraulic)
- Engine oil
- Hydraulic oil
We also suggest that everyone have at least one spare key to absolutely everything. Keep them labeled and keep them where you can find them!
Along with all this, you’ll want a tool kit so you can put these parts to use if needed. Wrenches, screwdrivers, socket sets, oil filter wrenches -- we don’t need to tell you how much easier things are with the right tool, do we?
Finding the Right Parts
Finding the right parts can be a breeze or a nightmare, depending on your equipment. It’s no surprise that new models and established brands are easier to find parts for.
The older and more obscure the machinery, the harder it might be to find parts. Having a trusted service partner comes in handy. An established shop has relationships and networking resources to find parts around the country and to take advantage of distribution networks.
Keep this in mind when you’re shopping for equipment. Sometimes a lower cost older machine is a great value, but if getting replacement parts for it turns into a huge chore, that inconvenience should be weighed when you make your buying decisions.
We support our customers in their DIY efforts! And when the time comes to get a professional involved, we hope you’ll keep us in mind. At Ebling's Service Plus + RS Hollinger, we have decades of experience keeping residential, commercial, and farm equipment in good repair so it’s ready when you are. We’re always happy to talk shop, so call us or stop by with your questions.
